DJ Shadow has a long-standing reputation as one of the most influential disc jockeys in the instrumental hip-hop genre. His ability to sample various sounds and phrases into his tracks is unmatched, and has led him to become the first producer in the game to have their music described as trip-hop when his “In/Flux” single started circulating the London club scene in 1994.

Now, over two decades later, the California-native has continued to bring his heart thumping, genre-bending production work to the forefront. His latest single is a collaborated effort with hip-hop superduo Run The Jewels titled “Nobody Speak,” and is the latest track to be released off of Shadow’s forthcoming The Mountain Will Fall album.

“Nobody Speak” follows the release of the album’s eponymous single “The Mountain Will Fall,” and leads into DJ Shadow’s effort to blend together new soundscapes and introduce up-and-coming artists to his dedicated fan base. The track is brutal combination of slick guitar strokes, slamming percussion, and dark emphatic horns. The downtempo quality is reminiscent of DJ Shadow’s signature sound, and the relentless lyricism of Run The Jewels is beautifully layered over the track’s smooth-flowing aura.

“Occasionally, I make a beat that demands a specific vocal treatment and attitude. In the case of ‘Nobody Speak,’ I wasn’t going to settle for anyone other than Run The Jewels; in my mind, it was them or no one. Fortunately, they agreed, and they took the track to a place I could never get to on my own. That’s the definition of a rewarding collaboration.” – DJ Shadow

The release was also announced as a part of the Run The Jewels’ Record Store Day this past Saturday, where fans had the chance to go their local record stores to purchase a “VRTJ” – aka a Virtual Reality cardboard viewer – that provided a free download code for the track.
