Bo Burnham recently released a music video for his song “Repeat Stuff” which he first performed in his standup special “what.”. The song takes clear shots at the pop music industry, especially how generalized love songs are to appeal to a broad crowd in order to make the most money. Bo notes a clear vicious cycle that is plaguing teenage girls, saying “I’m in magazines with model teens so far above you, so read them and hate yourself, then pay me to tell you ‘I love you'”. The music video is similar to the standup performance of the song, with just a little more references to pop stars being affiliated with Satan.
Last year on an interview with Conan, Bo apologized for making fun of Justin Bieber in his standup routine while Bieber happened to be in the audience. While the lyrics don’t insult the Biebs in this song, Bo’s character certainly seems to parody many of his music videos with the posing almost a minute into the video. Hopefully, Bo will continue to produce great and offbeat content like this. I look forward to his next comedy special, since “what.” was wonderful.
